The devotion to Our Lady of Good Success began in the early 1600s in Quito, Ecuador, when Our Lady appeared to Mother Mariana de Jesús Torres, a Conceptionist nun. In these apparitions, Our Lady spoke about future trials in the Church and promised her special protection and guidance to those who remain faithful and turn to her with confidence.

Centuries later, Our Lady again reached out to her children through the devotion of the Miraculous Medal. On November 27, 1830, in a chapel in Paris, France, Our Lady appeared to St. Catherine Labouré and asked that a medal be struck according to the vision she revealed. She said:

“Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck.”

In the vision, Our Lady stood upon a globe with dazzling rays of light flowing from her outstretched hands, symbolizing the graces she pours out upon those who ask for them. On the reverse side appeared the letter M surmounted by a cross, and below it the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced with a sword.

The medal was first made in 1832 with the approval of the Catholic Church, and it quickly spread throughout France and beyond. The blessings Our Lady promised began to be widely reported, and the medal soon became known as “The Miraculous Medal.” Today it remains one of the most beloved devotions in the Catholic Church, second only to the Rosary.
