In 1573, Pope Saint Pius V established the feast in thanksgiving for the Christian victory at the Battle of Lepanto—a triumph widely attributed to the faithful praying the Rosary. The feast was later added to the universal Church calendar in 1716.

Because of these graces, it became known as the Miraculous Medal.
