On December 9, 1531, Mary, as Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego a poor Indian, as he walked to Mass. Mary asked Juan to go to Bishop and request a chapel be built on the site where she appeared. The Bishop asked him to return with a sign from Our Lady. On December 12 Mary appeared to Juan again and asked him to pick roses growing out of season and take them to the Bishop. When Juan presented the roses to the Bishop, the miraculous image known as Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on his tilma. The image is still preserved in Mexico City almost 500 years later and devotion to her is great for pro-life work and as patroness of the Americas. 

Attached to each scarf is a mini Miraculous Medal. The medal design was made in 1832 with the approval of the Catholic Church after Mary had appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in Paris in 1830. The medal was quickly distributed throughout France and blessings that Mary had promised flowed to all who wore the medal. It became referred to as "The Miraculous Medal" and is still one of the strongest devotions throughout the world in the Catholic Church, just behind the rosary.
